Classic upright monuments come in a wide range of sizes and are commonly referred to as single, double (companion), or family monuments. These terms describe how many inscriptions the monument is designed to hold rather than exact dimensions. The upright portion (called the die) often ranges from about 20 inches wide to 4 feet or more, depending on the design and cemetery regulations.
Bases are sized proportionally to the upright to provide proper balance and support. Base dimensions vary depending on the size of the die, and in many cases oversized or custom bases can be chosen as a design preference, when allowed by the cemetery.
Thickness is largely a personal preference and part of the overall design. Six-inch thickness is the most common choice for both upright dies and bases, while eight-inch or ten-inch thickness may be selected for a heavier, more substantial appearance. Granite can be finished in several different ways depending on the look you prefer. Common options include polished (smooth and glossy), steeled (matte with reduced glare), axed or sawn (natural textured finishes), and rock pitch (a hand-split, traditional edge). Many monuments combine finishes for contrast and character.
A polished margin is a narrow polished band — typically about 1.5 to 2 inches wide — running along the top edge of the base, while the rest of the base sides are left rock pitched (rough, natural texture). The polished band frames the monument cleanly, creates contrast against the rough sides, and gives the base a more finished, intentional look. It's a common upgrade on classic upright monuments and pairs well with most granite colors. See example →
